Tips for travelling with your motorhome for the first time

Travelling by motorhome for the first time or simply want to refresh your basic knowledge before your first trip?
We'll show you what you need to look out for when travelling with a motorhome and while you're on the road.

1. Before setting off

Give your motorhome a complete check-up, especially if you want to start after a winter break.

  • Do the tyres have enough air pressure? Have you possibly left?

  • What does the water tank look like? Does it still need to be cleaned?

  • How full is the gas cylinder? Should it be topped up or replaced?

  • Tip: If you charge the on-board battery from the mains before starting, it will increase the performance

2. During the journey

It is not permitted to walk around in the motorhome during the journey. This applies to all fellow travellers, whether human or animal. Pay attention to the number of seats in the motorhome and use a child seat for your children or grandchildren. It is also not permitted to lie down in the motorhome bed while driving.

3. Fresh water tank

Only fill the tank to half or a third full before travelling. Every litre of water means additional load. You can then fill up your water tank at the local campsites.

4. Motorhome loaded

Before starting your journey, check the actual unladen weight of the vehicle and the permissible total weight. It is not advisable to simply load luggage into the motorhome without thinking. Tip: Move heavy luggage downwards and preferably between the front and rear axle, light luggage upwards - this stabilises the vehicle with a low centre of gravity. Think logically about where which things are stored. Thanks to EASY ENTRY, you can access the luggage that you have loaded from the outside from the inside of your Carthago motorhome. 5. Unsecured load

Stow your luggage properly. Before leaving, check that everything is properly stowed away and that all cupboards and drawers are properly closed. By the way: Our chic e-line/s-plus and liner-for-two model ranges score points with central locking in the kitchen area.

6. Driving style

You should do a short test lap before your first drive to get a feel for the vehicle again. The right look in the exterior rear view mirrors, manoeuvring in tight spaces and cornering behaviour - all these things need to be learned. This is because braking behaviour and visibility are different in motorhomes compared to cars. With Carthago das Reisemobils on Fiat Ducato, you can rely on an optimised view to the front thanks to the cab visibility concept: View of the road surface after just 2.77 m.
All the advantages of the cab view concept.

7. Breaks

Make sure you take enough breaks on your holiday journey, as long journeys are tiring and require concentration. Swap driving positions and/or spend the night at a campsite along the route.
Tip: Allow enough time to switch your motorhome from driving mode to living and sleeping mode.

8. Waste water disposal

Dispose of your waste water in good time. "Dumping is certainly not one of your favourite tasks on holiday, but it has to be done. A distinction is made between grey water - from showers, sinks and washbasins - and black water, the waste water from the toilet.

9. Departure

Take your time for your departure and check the motorhome again beforehand: Are the cupboards, refrigerator and skylights closed? Is the power cable disconnected from the motorhome? Are all windows and storage compartment hatches closed? Is there a supply and disposal station on site? Because with some fresh water on board and an empty waste water and septic tank, you can look forward to new adventures in a much more relaxed way.
